How to Get There?

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz can be readily reached by road, rail, and air. It is served by many public bus and tram lines. There are several related stops because the university campus is very large. The public transport bus and tram services provided within the city itself offer connections to nearly all destinations within Mainz and Wiesbaden.

By public transport

The city of Mainz has a main station and a number of other rail stations. Please check the Deutsche Bahn website for train timetables. The easiest way to get to the Gutenberg Campus is to alight at the main station and to then take a bus or tram.

The following lines serve the university from the main station:

  • 9 (towards Arena)
  • 51 (towards Lerchenberg)
  • 53 (towards Lerchenberg)
  • 54 (towards Klein-Winternheim)
  • 55 (towards Nieder-Olm)
  • 56 (towards Wackernheim)
  • 57 (towards Bretzenheim)
  • 58 (towards Finthen)
  • 59 (towards Hochschule Mainz)
  • 68 (towards Budenheim)
  • 79 (towards Ingelheim)
  • 90 (towards Finthen)
  • 91 (towards Lerchenberg)
  • 93 (towards Lerchenberg)
  • 630 (towards Sprendlingen/Bad Kreuznach)

We would recommend using the tram lines 51, 53, and 59, all of which stop directly at the main entrance to the campus.

For the journey from the Mainz main station to the University stop, you can buy a short hop ticket known as a Kurzstrecken-Ticket in German. It is cheaper than a normal ticket and can be purchased from the bus driver or from a ticket machine. You can find additional information online on the website of the Mainz public transport operator, Mainzer Mobilität.
